Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Broome rates were hovering between 50 and 60% due to rising airfare and competition

THE West Australian town of Broome is suffering a tourism crisis, with rising airfares and strong competition from Bali leading to a 20 per cent drop in visitors. Qantas has cancelled one service from each of the Sydney to Broome and Melbourne to Broome routes until June 11 because of “weaker than usual” forward bookings, while next month’s Broome Beach Polo has been cancelled.
