Rio Grande do Sul Brazil: Carnaval nets 495 arrests for DUI in four days

On February 12, 2013, G1 reported that police in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul concluded Operação Viagem Segura, a four-day operation meant to control crime during the annual Carnaval season. During the time period police arrested some 495 motorists due to driving under the influence. Police also monitored nearly 84,000 vehicles in Rio Grande do Sul, collecting around 1,000 of them due to various infractions. During the final night of Carnaval and the early hours of Ash Wednesday, police ask that motorists and pedestrians be careful in traffic situations. Read Article
