Canadian who killed Briton at Peru retreat says it was ‘kill or die’

Theguardian.com reported that Joshua Stevens claims he had to stab Unais Gomes when Briton turned violent on double dose of hallucinogen ayahuasca. A Canadian man has told reporters he stabbed and killed a British friend in self-defense at a spiritual retreat in the Peruvian jungle because he felt he had no choice but to kill or be killed.

Joshua Stevens told Canadian broadcaster CTV Winnipeg that Unais Gomes, 26, a University of Cambridge graduate from London, attacked him and two others in December after taking the hallucinogen ayahuasca.

The tourist was arrested in Peru but later released when witnesses corroborated the tourist’s version of events that resulted in the friends death. He has returned to Canada but the case remains under investigation.
