Cozumel Mexico: passenger from cruise ship drowns while swimming at beach

Andrew Woofen from Florida was swept away as he entered a unsafe beach area of playa Punta Morena Cozumel.
lapoliciaca.com reported that a passenger of the cruise ship Carnival Elation, drowned in a beach area on the east coast of the Cozumel. He entered a high risk area of the beach and was swept away, according to the Directorate of Civil Protection.

Friends observed him enter the ocean and was swept away by the current. They then called for assistance. Before paramedics arrived, someone attempted to save Mr. Woofen but, because he was obese the unnamed volunteer had difficulties and had to be assisted by Red Cross paramedics when they arrived. A witness and friend of the victim told authorities that the victim did not know it was a hazardous area when he entered the water. A spokesperson indicated that the victim was to have an autopsy performed and returned to his family in the United States. Read Article
