Tourists should remain vigilant and avoid demonstrations in Greece

Posted on May 10, 2012 • Filed under: Europe, Tourist Warning

General strikes and demonstrations have been taking place more frequently in Greece recently due to the imposition of additional austerity measures. Some demonstrations have triggered clashes between the police and protesters and in some instances, protesters have set fire to buildings. Demonstrations may occur throughout the country, but they often take place in Syntagma Square, in front of the Parliament building in Athens, with assembly points throughout the city centre. Strikes and demonstrations may significantly affect transportation services, such as trains, buses, taxis, metro, ferries and cruise ships, as well as public health services. Expect road closures, particularly in Athens. Flights may be disrupted and access to airports and ports may be difficult. Contact your airline to check the status of your flight and allow plenty of time to make your way to the airport. Read article
