TOURIST DIES OF APPARENT HEART ATTACK WHILE CLIMBING CHIMBORAZO VOLCANO
Ralf Wüstneck a tourist from Germany died suddenly on February 4, 2013 while climbing Chimborazo Volcano. Apparently the hiker suffered a heart attack according to asturiasmundial.com. He had been part of a group of seven tourists along with mountain guides that began their ascent via the southern route of Chimborazo on Sunday February 3, 2013. They rested at 5100 meters and began the next ascent on on Sunday evening and reached the summit at about 8:00 am on Monday. After resting for one half hour. When they began their descent Mr. Ralf Wüstneck was having difficulty and suddenly collapsed when he tried to sit down. Witnesses indicated he suffered a heart attack. Members of the team approached him and discovered he had no vital signs at about 12:00pm. Because of the expeditions altitude, they left the body of the deceased and exited to lower camp with the other tourists and to notify authorities. Mountain guides and park rangers had difficulty returning to the body do to inclement weather, and recovered the body Tuesday. Read Article
