Mahout of elephant that trampled Gareth Crowe charged with negligence as animal rights campaigners call for an end to use of animals in tourism trade. The handler of a marauding elephant that trampled a British tourist to death in Thailand has been charged with negligence after police studied photographs on the dead man’s camera. The images recovered from the camera of Gareth Crowe allegedly showed that the “recklessness” of the handler, or mahout, contributed to the tragedy, police said. Investigators said that the Burmese man neglected his duty by climbing down from the elephant’s neck to take a photo for the tourists and then lost control of the animal. Read Article
